Châteauneuf-du-Pape roughly translates to The Pope’s New Castle, and the history of this rich red wine is firmly entwined with papal history. It was built in the 14th century for Pope John XXII, the second of the popes residing in Avignon.
Arles offers ancient history in the two-tiered amphitheatre built by the Romans in the 1st century AD, today used for plays and concerts.
