Luxor Temple is dedicated to the god Amun, often fused with the sun-god Ra into Amun-Ra. The Luxor Temple had begun to be excavated in 1884 by Professor Gaston Maspero. Excavations were carried out sporadically until 1960. Luxor Temple is built of a sandstone referred to as Nubian Sandstone. Interesting fact, the two obelisks flanking the entrance are not the same height, but they create the illusion that they are. In Luxor (ancient Thebes), there are six great temples. In 331 B.C., Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great. The Catacombs of Kom El Shokafa, rock-cut tombs with features unlike that of any other catacomb in the ancient world, is considered one of the seven wonders of the Middle Ages. Archaeologists believe that the Catacomb of Kom el Shoqafa was begun in the 2nd century A.D. and was used to intern the dead for the next 200 years.
