For me, the worst thing about Nusa Lembongan is that you cannot fly directly there from New Zealand or Australia!Nusa Lembongan is just a short half hour boat trip away from Sanur and it is soooo worth the trip. Now, I'm not saying a day trip - I'm telling you - book at least a couple of days and explore the Island.
I love Bali, and have been umpteen times but when a good friend suggested that you should head over to Nusa Lembongan for something a little different, I didn't think twice.
Nusa Lembongan is Bali 30 years ago. No vehicles are permitted on the island, apart from the open air taxis for collection of guests and the favourite mode of transport on the island is the good ol' scooter. You can hire them for $10 per day
Our boat (water taxi) dropped us at our accommodation and we had reached beachfront heaven. The first thing I would recommend is grabbing a cold beer, getting your change from $NZ3.00, sitting on a bean bag outside your room and just taking it all in. Here is one of my dinner bills for a family of 4:
Travelling around the island on a scooter will take around 2hrs. You can stop at many places for a cold drink (and toilet stop). All dining options seem to be on the beach. The island is so diverse, the roads are not so good so it is best to concentrate on what you are doing. Dogs, chickens and pot holes are just a few of the things you need to avoid to prevent injury!
We moved after a few days to another accommodation, just because we could! We headed around a 15min scooter ride away onto the other side of the island, it was so easy - and everything is so cheap!! Here was the view from my room.

- Do a dive course
- Paddleboard
- Surf
- Banana Boat
- Fish
- Drink
- Sunbathe
- Read
We took our scooters and hired paddleboards at the Mangroves at the far end of the island. Lunch again was cheap and superb. Taking a ride in the mangroves was awesome...dont forget to wear a hat and sunscreen though - boy it was hot this day.
